THE GEORGE L. GRAZIADIO ENDOWED CHAIR OF ITALIAN STUDIES
The Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and
Literatures at California State University, Long Beach invites
applications and nominations for The George L. Graziadio Endowed
Chair of Italian Studies, a position funded with substantial
support from the Italian American community to facilitate the
establishment of the first Italian major program in the southern
region of the California State University system. The successful
candidate will have an internationally prominent reputation, a
distinguished record of scholarly and creative activities, and a
demonstrated potential for developing an outstanding Italian
Studies Program. In addition, the duties of the Chair will
include teaching and promoting cultural programs within the
University as well as in the Italian and Italian American
communities in the USA and abroad. A position description with a
detailed statement of qualifications will be sent to all

Applications for a Fall 1999 appointment are invited from
specialists in any field of Italian Studies. Candidates with
expertise in contemporary fields of Italian and European studies
are especially encouraged to apply. Although the appointment is
intended to be made at senior rank, outstanding applicants in
mid-career will be given careful consideration. Nominations are
