CALL FOR PAPERS
France, Germany and Britain - Partners in a Changing World
A day conference to take place at the
University of Bradford on Friday 21 May 1999
This conference aims to bring together scholars who share an interest
in the Franco-German relationship in the widest sense, be it on a
political, economic, financial, industrial, historical or cultural
level, and the relations Britain has with these European partners.
With the recent political demise of Helmut Kohl, following the death
of Francois Mitterrand in 1996, both great advocates of
Franco-German co-operation, both long at the helm of their
respective countries, relations between France and Germany have
reached a critical turning point. During his election campaign
Gerhard Schroeder seemed to advocate a less exclusive relationship
with France at a time when Britain is willing to play a major role
on the European stage. Is a triangular axis likely to emerge from
this new configuration and, if so, will France be the loser? Or will
the Franco-German partnership be able to gather momentum once again
at a time of unprecedented European change? How 'different' - and
how compatible - are France and Germany at the start of the new
millennium? Contributions are invited around the following themes:
- The Franco-German partnership in historical perspective.
- German unification and its consequences for Franco-German
relations.
- Personal relations between heads of State and Government:
Kohl-Mitterrand; the new Schroeder-Chirac and Schroeder-Blair
relationships.
- Britain and the Franco-German link: prospects for a triangular
axis?
- France, Germany and the European Central Bank: conflicting
monetary philosophies?
- Die Frankfurter Boerse, la Bourse de Paris and the City.
- Franco-German trade and direct investments.
- Corporate governance and management cultures in France, Germany
and the UK.
- Industrial policies and strategies in France, Germany and the UK.
- Green issues and nuclear co-operation.
- Divergent concepts of Europe: France, Germany, Britain and current
European challenges.
- Cultural co-operation.
