CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
ALT-C 99 will examine the entire life-cycle of learning technology,
from initial design through to implementation and outcome evaluation.
Effective use of learning technology depends upon integration within
traditional academic and curricular frameworks, and ALT-C 99 will focus
on discipline-base implementation and address associated issues of
policy and staff development.
Each day of the conference will address one of the three themes of
Design, Practice and Outcomes.
Day 2 of the conference will study the implementation of technology
from a practitioner’s perspective, and discipline-specific sessions
will be run in conjunction with the CTI (Computing in Teaching
Initiative) in collaboration with other higher education projects and
programmes.
You are invited to submit one or more proposals by 9 APRIL 1999 related
to the conference theme as follows:
# Paper Sessions (20 minutes presentation, 5 minutes questions)
Paper proposals should describe either original work which has given
rise to substantial results or policy initiatives which have a
significant impact on educational practice.
# Interactive Presentations (a rolling 'show and tell' presentation in
an hour long slot).
Criteria are the same as for paper proposals, but material should be
more suited to being presented interactively.
Selected Papers resulting from paper sessions and interactive
presentations will be published in ALT's peer- reviewed journal ALT-J.
# Discussion sessions (20 minutes presentation, 5 minutes questions)
These sessions provide an opportunity for multi-activity projects or
units to present contrasting aspects of their work, and for colleagues
from different institutions to share their views and experiences.
Selected papers from discussion groups will be published in CTI's
journal 'Active Learning'.
# Works in progress sessions (15 minutes presentation, 5 minutes
questions)
Proposals for works in progress are encouraged. Criteria for paper
proposals apply.
All accepted abstracts will be published on the web site before the
conference and included in the conference handbook (on the condition
delegates register with the conference).
CONFERENCE THEMES
Each day of the conference will be based upon one of the three themes of
Design, Practice and Outcomes. Within that framework a number of
sub-themes will be addressed:
# Best educational practice
Rethinking approaches and exploring best practice in the use of the
different learning technologies
# Delivery mechanisms
The infrastructure needed to support innovative teaching and learning
# Assessment
Improving feedback to students and streamlining assessment and
monitoring procedures
# Multimedia
Introducing a broad range of media with the use of new technologies
# Implementation and integration
Exploring the issues that determine the effective integration of
learning technologies into existing or new curricula
# Staff development
Policies to support the effective development of learning technologies
in the curriculum.
# Evaluation
Assessing the use of communications & information technology in
teaching and learning to inform innovative design and practice
# Organisational change
Changes needed to maximise the benefits of learning technologies
RESOURCES
Standard presentation hardware and software, data
projectors, PCs and OHPs will be provided for all sessions, except
interactive presentations for which presenters will be responsible for
providing equipment needed. 35mm projectors will be available on
request.
