Dear Colleague,
May I bring the following notice to your attention.
***********************************
ASSOCIATION FOR INTERNATIONAL CANCER RESEARCH (AICR) FUNDED STUDENTSHIP
A three years research studentship, funded at MRC stipend rates
(currently #6865-7676) is available from April 1999 working on S Phase
Cell Cycle Checkpoints In Small Cell Lung Cancer And Their Activation By
Topoisomerase I Inhibitors. Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an
initially responsive chemosensitive tumour, but the recurrent disease is
often unresponsive to further chemotherapy. The research will focus on
developing the scientific basis for the treatment for SCLC using
topoisomerase I inhibitors (eg topotecan). The appointed student will
receive training in biochemistry and cell biology, and in
state-of-the-art techniques in confocal and multiphoton microscopy, and
flow cytometry. Applications from graduates (minimum upper-second class
honour degree) in any biological sciences subject are welcome.
The project is to be located in the Department of Pathology, University
of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM) at Cardiff. The scientific members
of the Department have interests in p53 biology, DNA repair, anticancer
drugs , cell cycle control, cell senescence/immortalization, and
telomerase. The Department's laboratories have been re-furbished and
UWCM is well placed for the extension of existing and future
clinical-laboratory interactions. UWCM has an excellent post-graduate
student support programme and in-house training facilities.
