Our group uses DECs running OSF and we've been very satisfied with them.
Our machine is is a Dec Alpha from about 3 years ago and I believe it's
still faster than anything that Sun has on the market at the moment.
It's just a bit faster than a Pentium II 400 running Debian Linux. But
if you're looking for speed/power at a good price, the newest Dec machines
are blinding. The new DEC 1000 machines benchmark (Matlab 5.3 benchmark
function) at 3x the speed of our machine. They're going for about 8000
British pounds.
If you want to trade off speed/price, then stick with the fastest PC
you can get and put Linux on it. Again that'll be faster than both
Suns and SGIs at even triple the price.
BTW, for such large analyses you'll need a decent sized memory too. We're
running with about 700MB without problems but I'd recommend a gig or more.
Fast disks are also a bonus with that many files.
