Colleagues,
Please pass on information about the SEEC workshop on
international credits to any who might be interested.

SEEC Southern England Consortium for Credit Accumulation and
Transfer

Staff Development Workshop

Mobility Through International Credit?
International Credit Systems, ECTS and its Implementation

Tuesday 7th December, 1999. 10.30 to 4.00

London Voluntary Sector Resource Centre,
356 Holloway Road,
London, N7 6PA

Background
As student mobility increases, the issue of recognition of awards,
units,
modules and credits gained in other countries becomes
increasingly
significant. The workshop will provide an opportunity for those
involved
in maintaining and developing international links to discuss different
approaches to the international calibration of learning and credit rating
and its attendant regulatory and administrative processes.

The workshop will be of interest to those in HE who have a responsibility
for, or who are actively involved in, student exchange programmes, in
particular staff dealing with the issues of the comparability and quality
assurance of transnational programmes and awards.

The workshop
The first session will take the parameters of the standard UK credit
system as a basis for looking at other tertiary credit systems from
mainland Europe and other continents. On the basis of live cases the
session will identify similar features between systems but also show that
systems may choose to focus on quite different issues of curriculum
structure and student progression. From disparities across national
systems the session will return to the philosophy and structure of the
European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which seeks to offer a common
denominator between European systems.

The second session will focus on the institutional implementation of ECTS
under the SOCRATES institutional contract. On the basis of the live
example of one UK institution the session will seek to identify the
strengths and complications of ECTS.

In the afternoon session delegates will be encouraged to opt to engage
directly with one of the morning's themes and to reflect upon the issues
in the context of their own UK institution.

The Presenters
Christopher Harris, University Credit & Credential Evaluator, Anglia
Polytechnic University (APU) Christopher has an academic background as a
European linguist, in which capacity he lectured in UK universities for
some 15 years. Thereafter a series of career accidents led him into a
research, development, and implementation role at APU in UK and
international credit transfer. From there he established the role of
Credential Evaluator at APU, which links issues of student mobility with
issues of educational equivalence across national tertiary systems.

Maidi Brown, Director of International Relations, Anglia Polytechnic
University, APU Maidi has many years experience working in international
education and conducting research into the international dimension of the
student experience. She has been responsible for international relations
at APU since 1991 and has been developing an institutional approach to
international student mobility including regulatory, academic, quality
assurance and administrative aspects. As Socrates Institutional
Co-ordinator, she is responsible for implementing ECTS at APU.
