BRITISH ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE 

JOB DESCRIPTION - PRESS OFFICER (maternity cover)

REPORTING TO DIRECTOR, BA 2000

The Association's Press Officer, Sallie Robins, will be taking maternity
leave shortly and we are seeking someone to provide maternity cover
during her absence.  The post is offered for an initial 6-month period
from July - December 1999.  The Press Officer is responsible for liaison
with the press on behalf of the Association.  The main focus of the
press liaison will concern the Annual Festival of Science and setWeek.
Responsibilities will include:

*	maintaining an up-to-date list of appropriate media contacts

*	maintaining existing links with science, technology and other
journalists

*	forging links with new contacts as appropriate to the main focus
of the Press Officer's work

*	identifying media opportunities for the Association 

*	providing information about the Association to the press

*	making detailed and extensive arrangements for the media at the
Annual Festival (including facilities on the site, provision of
speakers' papers for journalists, and organising press conferences both
before the Festival and during the event itself) in association with
Isis Public Relations Ltd*

*	keeping in close touch with the PR and marketing strategy and
management of Creating Sparks

*	creating and maintaining effective links with the organisers of
SetWeek activities and with those responsible for shaping the Annual
Festival programme

*	liaising with all members of staff to keep abreast of current
activity and priorities, especially those responsible for the main
activities above

*	monitoring press coverage achieved including that of the
Festival in 1999

*	other tasks as required by the Director

>From time to time the job entails working extended hours and at
weekends.  Attendance at the Annual Festival is essential and sometimes
other events.

-----------------------------

*Management of the Press Centre at the Festival in Sheffield in
September 1999 will be provided by Isis PR Ltd.  The postholder will
work closely with Isis and play an active role during the week.
