GLAXOWELLCOME GRADUATE STUDENTSHIP
"STRUCTURAL LANDSCAPES IN HYDROGEN-BONDED BIOMOLECULAR SYSTEMS"
Applications are invited from well qualified graduates, or those just about
to graduate, for a fully funded research studentship leading to a DPhil degree,
under the supervision of Professor J P Simons and Professor J M Brown at Oxford
and Dr Romano Kroemer at Queen Mary Wesfield College, in London.
The research involves the exploration of the conformational,
supra-molecular and electronic structures of a range of neuro-transmitters,
amino acids, model peptides and enzyme mimics, and their size-selected,
hydrated clusters. This is being achieved through a laser-based spectroscopic
programme, conducted at rotational and vibrational levels of resolution, and a
parallel computational programme, conducted at ab initio levels of theory. The
central interpretative aim is to understand the way in which non-bonded, and
hydrogen-bonded interactions determine the molecular (and electronic)
structures of isolated and solvated biomolecular assemblies.
The research is aided by active collaborations with Professor David W Pratt's
group in Pittsburgh and Professor Alberto Beswick's group in Toulouse.
Applicants are invited to send a full CV, together with the names of two
referees, to Professor J P Simons as soon as possible (address and FAX number
given below). Some recent and forth-coming publications include:
