The boats were known as 'starvationers', were particularly narrow, and
had a number of ribs along the cargo area inside. Small 'tubs' or boxes
were loaded into the boats between the ribs. An example of one such boat
which lay derelict for a number of years by the entrance to one of the
canal tunnel portals into the mines is now preserved at Ellesmere Port
Boat Museum.
