Hopefully someone can prove me wrong, but it would appear that very
little has been written specifically relating to the timbering of
shafts. There is much information on brick and iron linings for
shafts, and much for timbering of levels, working stopes & coal faces
but I've found only a couple of almost cursory references to timbering
of shafts.
One of which is; M.W von Bernewitz, 'Handbook for Prospectors', 1931,
2nd ed'n, pp.83-84.
In this publication both shafts and levels are treated in the same
manner, and although similar principles must apply, they do ultimately
require slightly different techniques.
