Victor,
Further to Mike Moore's message, there is a reasonable amount of
information available about Highley Colliery. Briefly it worked from
1878 to 1969, although from 1940 it simply acted to provide
ventillation and emergency access to workings reached from the more
modern Alveley Colliery. Perhaps of most direct interest to yourself
or other family historians are a set of papers in the Staffordshire
Record Office which include the register of workmen's contracts in
which you may find your Grandfather's name. For more general reading,
in addition to Ivor Brown's latest book you might try Mining in
Shropshire; Mike can give you details.
If you would like to contact me directly off the mailbase with the
name of your grandfather I will have a look through my papers and see
if I have anything about him.
