Dear List,
My boss has, just off his island, the wreckage of an East Indiaman
and one of the items in the cargo were "cut and uncut agates" from India. My
dictionary defines agates as a semi-precious gem, very hard. I have been told
that in the 18th century (ship went down in 1776) agates formed the basis
for signet ringss, ie the bit with your initials on for pressing into wax
seals. Beyond that I know nothing. Any takers ?
