It seems that some people are incapable of reading the sources provided for
them
Chalrons were a changing unit of measurement originating in a volumetric
measure
However by the C17 it was defined by statute as one weight; when used in
Customs accounts. Accounts of coal production at this period clearly show
that it was a unit of weight.
Similarly the bushel was defined, for salt, as being 56 lbs in the various
late C17 Acts (and later) relating to salt duties.
I would have thought academics would have indulged less in knee jerk
reactions and considered the matter more fully before committing ill
considered and inaccurate statements to the discussion. There can be no
excuse for amateurishness in my opinion
