I wonder if any member can help me with details of the life of the
following Cornish mining organisations and their publications. The
following is my current understanding:
1. Miners' Association of Cornwall and Devonshire — Formed in 1859, with
their first report published on 4 Feb 1862. Reports were published at
six-monthly intervals, with the Report of the General Meeting in the
first half of the year, and the Report of the Annual Meeting in the
second half. In 1873 a combined Report and Proceedings was published for
the years 1872 and 1873. When did the Association fold, and what was the
pattern of publications after 1873?
2. London and Westcountry Chamber of Mines — Formed in 1901, with the
first issue of the Records published in March, 1901, thereafter with the
intention of issuing the Records quarterly. This was not accomplished
for in 1902, the Records slipped to approximately 4 monthly intervals,
and subsequently more irregularly. The LWCM foundered in 1928. Was
publication of the Records continued to the end?
3. Cornish Institute of Mining, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineers —
Founded in 1912, with the first General Meeting held on 2 Nov 1912. The
first issue of the Transactions was published in 1913, and thereafter
annually. Up to 1925, Volume 10, this was generally achieved, except for
joint volumes for the years 1915/16 (Vols 3 and 4), and 1919/20 (Vols 7
and 8). What was the life of the Institute, and did it continue to
publish annual Transactions?
4. Cornish Chamber of Mines — Published Year Books, edited by H E Fern.
When was it founded, and when did it close? Where Year Books published
throughout its life? I have copies for 1919/20/21. Was there any
connection with the LWCM?
Any help will be greatly appreciated
John C Symons
