I was at the web awards 'ceremony' in New Orleans and I agree with a lot of
what you say. One of the issues that the Judging panel raised was that
there had to be a clearer definition of what they were judging in each of
the categories, they were not allowed to have any dialogue with those sites
nominated and found it difficult to decide on things other than over all
design i.e. was the design and content appropriate to its intended audience
?, who were the intended audience?
In conversation with David Bearman after the conference he thought that it
might have been controversial that two of the awards went to organizations
with members on the judging panel. His take on the situation was that they
had invited judges who were highly regarded and working for organisations
who produced professional looking websites, so there was a fair chance that
their own sites would score well. One suggestion David made was the
possibility that judges sites may be ineligible for the time they were a judge.
