I tried some years ago to trace the origin of a coat of arms on a late
19th century mineral dealer's letterhead, only to be told by the Lord
Chamberlain's Office that it was essentially meaningless. APparently
folks just bunged the coat of arms on things willy nilly simply because
some member of the Royal Family visited their shop once. Things are more
carefully controlled now.
