North Korea sets new frontier
Seoul.
North Korea today pronounced its disputed Yellow Sea border with rival
South Korea invalid and unilaterally declared a new frontier, which it
vowed to defend "by various means and methods". South Korea stood firm over
the explosive issue, insisting that the 46-year-old border was "not
negotiable".

Sea border dispute heats up
Seoul, Friday
South Korea today issued a warning to North Korea against attempting to
cross their disputed sea border, hinting it could resort to military might
to defend the boundary.
Seoul also put maritime police in the area on alert to protect fishing
boats operating in the territory, including five South Korean islands,
which the north claimed when it redrew its border yesterday.
But officials said there was no unusual movement in the Yellow Sea, where
North Korea unilaterally scrapped the 46-year-old inter-Korean frontier,
saying it would defend its new claim with "various means and methods".
"Should North Korea cross the Northern Limit Line, the military would
consider it as a provocation and would not tolerate it," the joint chiefs
of staff said in a statement.
It noted that the line, declared by the US-led United Nations Command at
the end of the Korean War in 1953, had served as an effective sea border
between the two Koreas for nearly half a century.
North Korea declared the line invalid and threatened to vigorously defend
its newly claimed border after it failed to compel the UNC to open talks on
redrawing the maritime frontier.
