Hello everyone,
I've just joined the int-boundaries list so a few words about myself.
I'm a journalist based in Calcutta, India, currently reporting for The
Telegraph newspaper. I've just returned from assignment in Kargil, on the
Line of Control in Kashmir between India and Pakistan, where the two nations
waged a limited war over the last two months.
My interest in borders and boundaries owes itself to large number of
disputes that India seems to be embroiled in. In my immediate vicinity is
the land border with Bangladesh that is largely undemarcated on the ground
-- I believe because it was haphazardly drawn -- when the country was
partitioned in 1947. Apart from the problem of "illegal immigration" that
Indian authorities complain of, there is also the peculiarity of Indian
enclaves in Bangladesh and Bangladeshi enclaves in India. Hundreds of
thousands of people who live in these enclaves find themselves without
citizenship rights of either country.
I would be happy to share experiences, know experts and exchange views on
border disputes particularly in the context of South Asia.
all the best,
Sujan
