As far as I can remember, these islands were the first "Kuwaiti"
territory to be liberated by the allies in January 1991. They were
captured by US naval forces (presumably marines) and their capture was
used to convey the impression that the Allies were preparing a major
amphibious assault on Iraqi-held Kuwait. Doesn't add much to your
technical requirements but it makes the islands interesting.
