Visualizing and Exploring Census Data
This course is run jointly by UKBORDERS and the Census Dissemination Unit at MIDAS, and is open to students and
staff of UK academic institutions only. The course focuses on using ArcView and other exploratory spatial data analysis
software to map and explore census data sets. The course is aimed at novice and intermediate users and will presume no
previous experience of using desktop mapping or GIS software. How to access and extract boundary and census data
will be covered briefly, but first time users of the Census are encouraged to attend the previous day's Introduction to the
1991 Census course for a more detailed coverage of these topics.
Users will be taken through the process of extracting census variables from the MIDAS system, importing the data into a
desktop mapping package, manipulating the data and linking it to the census boundaries, and producing maps using a
range of visualization techniques. Novel visualization techniques for exploratory analysis of census data will also be
demonstrated. These include the Cartographic Data Visualizer (cdv), a software package written for the higher education
community, and current development work on a Java application that provides on-line interactive analysis of census data
within a web browser. The course will involve hands-on practicals using the ArcView desktop mapping software and
other packages including MapInfo will be demonstrated.
