We had a similar requirement here, and have decided in the end that we will
have dedicated additional pages in the central registry student database to
store disability information related to particular students. We had sketched
the outline of a Microsoft Access Database (which you can export data from
the registry database and import it into Access), but it just ended up as
duplicating information and would have required constant updating with
exports from the central registry database. As the disability related
information is confidential and need only been seen by the Disability Office
staff, only these staff are granted read (and write) access. Saves an
enourmous amount of time.
Also, if you start making another database with student information on it,
then you have to register it with your institution's Data Protection Officer
to ensure that all is legal and above board.
Information about service providers, sources and contacts will be stored on
a dedicated database in our department, as this contains no information
about students whatsoever.

Subject: databases
Hi there
I am trying to set up a database for the Disability Service
here in
DCU. I need a database that is compatable with the university
(ITS)
DATABASE, so I can pull information of the general database.
The database would log information on individuals services and
group
services etc.
Has anyone any information on databases or packages worth
investigating?

Thanks in advance
Declan
