I went to the conference in December and I have booked to go on this update
conference. The December conference was well attended. There was limited
time for questions, although this didn't stop some controversial views being
expressed! The handouts were excellent and very much to the point for HE/FE.
I am looking forward to the this update conference since in the intervening
months it has become even more apparent that issues of Data Protection
impact on just about all activities in our institution. We are revising our
Information Systems Strategy and I have penciled in DP aside most sections,
not just the part on Security.
Hopefully, I will be able to meet others on this mailing list,
Mike Lloyd

> In December 1998 the highly successful conference took place on the
> implications of the Data Protection Act for Higher and Further
> Education Institutions. Delegates expressed a keen interest in having
> an update event in mid 1999 to report on the progress that has been
> made in implementing the act in the UK and its implications for H&FE.
> Interest was also expressed in developing understanding of the
> practical responses of the Act in terms of the security
> considerations. In addition, delegates wanted to look at the work of
> the compliance officer. Interest here was in how this individual was
> preparing, planning and implementing the Act and what problems were
> identified in trying to deal with this. Finally, there was interest
> in an updated legal analysis from a city practitioner specialising in
> the topic. The conference will welcome back speakers from the
> December event who are Phil Boyd and Hazel Grant. They will be joined
> by Andy Schulkins, Head of User Services of the University of
> Southampton Computing Service, and Michael Arthur, Director of
> Corporate Services at Southampton University and the University's data
> protection compliance officer. The morning session will be spent
> examining reports from these four speakers and the afternoon will be
> devoted entirely to discussion. The first part of the afternoon will
> be devoted to questions and answers arising from the four papers and
> this will be followed by specific discussion on a range of topics as
> set out in the programme. Delegates are invited to submit questions,
> at least three weeks before the conference date, by email, fax or
> post, and these will appear in the programme. Although priority, of
> course, will be given to questions on the day, the submitted questions
> will be given to the speakers in advance to assist with their

> who attended the previous conference, it is a stand-alone event, in

> implications of the Act for H&FE Institutions. Places are limited and
> early reservations are advisable.
