Actually, the Portland Group has a 15 day trial license of their
compilers (which are quite good - we use them on our cluster). After
the trial, you must purchase a license to keep using them.
You might have been thinking of the Pacific Sierra compiler, which is
free for personal use (see www.psrv.com for details). This actually
converts F90 code to F77 code plus calls to a custom library, all of
which is compiled with a F77 compiler such as g77.
