Yes. Also, in recent years there has been a lack of people who have been
willing to do the organizing necessary to host a meeting elsewhere. In order
to
host a meeting at any site, the meeting host (organizer) has to be generally
available for a week before the meeting to make last-minute arrangements,
answer
questions from hotel staff, and resolve last-minute problems.
I have wanted to host a meeting here in Milwaukee,WI for the last two
years,
but I have been doing a lot of consulting work out of town, so my presence in
town during the work week has been highly unpredictable. If I'm not around to
make arrangements, I can't host a meeting.
One more issue: Some members complain if getting to and from the meeting
site requires a non-trivial effort. We had our may 1998 meeting in Terre
Haute,
IN. The closest big city airport is Indianapolis, IN, about a hour and a half
away by car, even through the drive is door-to-door freeway. some people
still
complained.
