ASSISTANT ARCHIVIST (Scale Stlg 20,409 - 25,785 inclusive of London
Allowance) We are looking for a capable and enthusiastic archivist to
take up the permanent post of Assistant Archivist within the Archives
and Manuscripts Division of the School of Oriental and African Studies
Library. Appointment will be at a point on the Academic Related Scale
2 according to qualifications and experience.
The division of SOAS Library administers a large and important
collection of archives, manuscripts and rare books relating to the
study of Asia, Africa and the Pacific, from the seventeenth to the
twentieth centuries, and to the history of European activity in those
regions. The Library is a major centre for missionary collections and
its holdings include the archives of the China Inland Mission, the
Conference of British Missionary Societies, the Council for World
Mission (formerly known as the London Missionary Society) and the
Methodist Missionary Society. In addition there are business archives,
administrative and diplomatic collections and an immense range of
scholarly papers.
The post-holder will participate in acquiring and cataloguing archives
and manuscripts, using the division’s CAIRS-TMS automated system, in
maintaining and promoting the collections, and in delivering a
service to researchers. There will be a special responsibility for
improving the descriptive listing of the archive of the Council for
World Mission in preparation for offering networked access, and for
ensuring the smooth transfer of records from the CWM office in London.
The successful candidate should be a good honours graduate, with a
post-graduate qualification in archive administration, and with at
least two years experience of working with archives. Some records
management experience is desirable. Proven cataloguing skills and a
sound knowledge of professional standards in cataloguing are essential
as are keyboarding skills and understanding of computer applications
to archive cataloguing. The successful candidate will be
well-organised, an effective communicator, capable of working
independently and as part of a team A good reading knowledge of one
or more foreign languages, and knowledge and appreciation of overseas
history are highly desirable.
