Call for Papers for a Session at the
Annual Convention of the
Northeast Modern Language Association - NEMLA
to be held April 7-9, 2000 in Buffalo, New York:
R I L K E A N D T H E F U T U R E
The year 2000 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Rainer Maria Rilke
(1875-1926). Rilke's intuitions and ideas, his characteristically poignant,
melodic language, continue to resonate within the discourses of modernity
and beyond. As a poet, story-teller, novelist or critic, Rilke attracts
audiences in many languages as few of his contemporaries any longer do.
A uniquely appealing quality of Rilke lies in his emphatic postulate that
Humanity might yet fulfill through the being and acts of every person
alive the sublimity, ultimately tragic perhaps, which he believed it to be
its destiny.
This call for papers invites contributions on topics relevant to Rilke's
art and thought. "Rilke and the Future," his hopes and fears about a remark-
able range of human activity, seems a suitable theme on which contributors
might focus in planning papers, though this is a suggestion rather than a
requirement.
Please get in touch with me at one of the addresses below if you have
questions or suggestions regarding the session. Note too that those who
present papers at the Convention must be members of NEMLA by November 1,
1999.
Two-page abstracts or papers 8-10 pages long (15-20 minutes) should be sent by
September 15, 1999 to:
