Dear all -
Back on the list after a while in 'suspension', I have news of this
year's (intended) Warwick writer-in-residence: it is to be Rafael
Seligmann, b.1947, a German-Jewish writer who has published amongst
other things a novel called Der Musterjude (1997). He has a
reputation for his fresh and somewhat controversial approach to the
problematic of the post-war generations of German Jews.
We're awaiting confirmation from the DAAD that the residency can go
ahead as planned, so it's not quite all water-tight yet, but he
should be with us in the first half of the summer term.
As is becoming something of a tradition, we are hoping to mount a
one-day symposium on a Saturday during Seligmann's visit, this year
on the topic of 'Deutsch-Juedische Gegenwartskultur', i.e. specifically
with reference to *current* literature / other forms of cultural
articulation ('Kultur' is deliberately broad - and may take in e.g. film,
TV, visual arts, architecture, as well as literature). And part of
the intention in this message to the list is to put out some gentle
feelers as to who might be out there doing work on topics that could
come under this brief who would (a) want to attend the symposium and
(b) even better, want to present a paper at it.
We are certainly looking for someone who could present an 'overview'
paper addressing issues concerning German-Jewish culture in the
contemporary period, so as to provide a framework for other papers on
more specific themes. And also, of course, we are looking for papers
on topics such as recent German-Jewish writing/writers, artists,
filmmakers, etc. Seligmann will be present at the symposium, and we
have an offer in already for a presentation on the recent extension of the
Juedisches Museum in Berlin (i.e. on the statement of architecture in
a prominent Berlin site).
As mentioned, we are still awaiting proper confirmation that the
visit will go ahead, which is why the feelers are gentle - but ideas,
offers, names of interested parties would be most welcome and should
be directed to me - [log in to unmask] - or my colleague Helmut
Schmitz - [log in to unmask]
Best wishes!
Georgina
