As you are probably aware, there is an article about Site Server on Ariadne
(http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue19/nt/).
Index Server cannot really be used to index several sites, especially if
they are running on Unix or other operating systems (I know - I tried :-}).
Site Server Express doesn't have a search component, so that's not much use
either.
The good thing about Site Server is that it is easy to install, very
reliable, and the documentation is excellent. Most important of all - it's
very fast at providing search results. It will also index documents from a
range of servers regardless of the platform or server software.
The downside (and this is probably the same with most search software) is
that it can be pretty resource intensive. It can also be quite tricky coming
up with a decent search interface unless you know Active Server Pages (ASP)
really well. Of course, Site Server also costs money (but is available on
the Select scheme).
Incidentally, a 90 day trial version of Site Server is available...
