Andrew,
Sorry this is a bit late but I've just finished this
exercise.
About 18 months - 2 yrs ago the ratio was:-
Staff 1 Pc to 10 staff
Students 1:17
Today the latest figures:
Staff 1:1
Students 1:15
Staff - when I say 1:1 what I mean is I checked the numer of staff as full
time equivalents (about 1300) There are of course quite a few part timers
who possibly share a computer and there are staff such as cleaners who don't
have computers (although there's nothing to stop them registering if they
want to use one).
Generally though most staff who need a computer have their own on their
desk.
The student ration has also gone down. (we have about 17,000 students)
I have no idea how these figures compare with other Universities but 10
years ago we just didn't have PCs (we had some PRIME Computers and a few
central terminal rooms but no one had their own on the desk.
I hope this helps

Subject: IT resources within UK HE institutions
APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING
Hi Everyone,
I'm currently writing a document concerning the current state of IT
resources within UK HE institutions - with regard to the numbers of
available computers. The main aim of the document is to compare the
quality and quantity of current IT resources with those of ten years
ago. I'm having difficulty locating reliable and referenced figures both
for today and ten years ago. In particular I'm after the current ratio
of students to computer, students to staff and the approximate numbers
of students currently within UK HE institutions.
Any reply would be appreciated
Many thanks
