The guided busway colin referred to in Adelaide is dedicated to
specially fitted buses.
There are several issues to be considered in trying to run guided buses
on heavy rail lines while also running heavy rail services:
clearances to structures, particularly horizontal clearances
the safety case, which would almost certainly require automatic train
protection systems to be fitted to all vehicles and the signalling/train
control system to prevent a collision
"train" detection for the buses to register on the signalling system
depending upon the method of providing traction, the distance between
the bus wheels in relation to the rail gauge
There are no doubt other issues, but these are just some that came to
mind quickly...
