Call for applications: Professor of Chinese History

The Faculty of Arts at Leiden University, The Netherlands, invites applications for
a professorship in Chinese history (vacancy no. 9-215/2731). Duties include
* undertaking research in the history of pre-twentieth-century China
* initiating, stimulating and supervising postgraduate research
* teaching courses in the history of pre-twentieth-century China at all undergraduate and
pre-Master's levels: in the Department of Languages and Cultures of China as well as
interdisciplinary teaching programs, in lecture and seminar formats, and based on original
primary sources
* the active advancement of teaching and research in the history of pre-twentieth-century China
by others in the scholarly community
* management tasks in the Department of Languages and Cultures of China, the Faculty of Arts,
the CNWS Research School of Asian, African and Amerindian Studies, and other relevant intra-
and extramural research contexts.
Candidates must hold a PhD degree. Preference will be given to candidates with
* a PhD degree in Chinese Studies, with a demonstrable specialization in the intellectual and
cultural history, the social and economic history, or the institutional history of China prior
to the twentieth century
* outstanding research qualities manifest in an extensive, high-quality, internationally
accessible research record in one or (preferably) more historical periods of the above research
areas
* an excellent command of classical and modern Chinese, and of Japanese
* outstanding educational talents and broad experience in teaching at tertiary level
* experience in interdisciplinary cooperation
* demonstrable management and administrative skills, and demonstrable readiness and ability to
take an active part in management and administration in the Department, the Faculty, the Research
School, and other relevant intra- and extramural research contexts
* demonstrable readiness and ability to advance the interests of Chinese Studies at Leiden
University, both within and outside Academe.
If the professor appointed is not Dutch-speaking, s/he will be expected to acquire a good command
of Dutch within two years from taking up duty.
