New rewards for inspiration and innovation in raising the public awareness
of physics
A new scheme has been launched by the Institute of Physics to recognise
work which helps to increase awareness of the exciting nature of physics
and its relevance and impact in everyday life. The Public Awareness of
Physics Awards are intended to recognise and reward the work of individuals
or groups who have demonstrated excellence, inspiration and innovation in
bringing physics to the public. The awards will help raise the status of
this sort of activity in the eyes of public and commercial organisations
and institutions.
There are no restrictions on eligibility for awards. Nominees do not have
to be members of the Institute of Physics, physicists or physics trained.
Individuals or groups may be nominated. Nominations may be made by anyone,
including members of the Institute, staff and others. Up to five awards
will be given annually and will comprise a certificate and a gift.
Activities should raise awareness of physics, a physics based discipline or
a combination of subjects of which physics is a major element. They should
be aimed primarily at the general public not in formal education. This may
include family groups of parents or grandparents with children and extra
curricular activities.
The deadline for nominations for the 1999 awards is 28 May 1999. Further
details, nomination guidelines and forms are available from Katie Perry in
the Public Affairs Department. Tel: 0171 470 4800, Email:
