Dear Barry,
As Peter has correctly pointed out Nant-y-Mwyn used boat levels (2),
Speedwell Level in Derbyshire is another classic case, but the Nant-y-Mwyn
mine was unusual in this use due to water supply - at least during it's
working. The boat levels were, to my understanding, originated in Derbyshire
where there was more than sufficient supply, for what was, actually, a very
efficient alternative to rail. We must not forget of course the Nent Force
Level, which used this method for about a quarter of it's length - I am sure
others will site many other similar cases. Kind Regards, BERNARD
