The term main coal is found in north-east Wales to denote the principal
seam of steam coal, but I don't know of any other north Wales pit with
Main in its name. Llay Main may have been so called to distinguish it
from Llay Hall, a much older pit not far away. It certainly worked the
Main Coal as well as the Diamond. Alternatively, it may not be
coincidence that it was sunk in 1914 as a joint venture between the
Hickleton Main Colliery Co of Thurnscoe, Yorks, and Rea Ltd, coal
exporters of Liverpool (Lerry, Collieries of Denbighshire, p 69).
