On the Atlantic Coast-United States it was
still the norm in my region of Virginia for
industrial plants to close for a week in
summer and a week in winter. The week
in summer was round July 4th Holiday,
and the week in winter was the Christmas
week. That is until recently(last ten years
or so) the summer closing has'nt been
used. In my days living in the coalfields of
West Virginia/Western Pennsylvania the
miners there were on the generally same system. It depended on where you
worked about being payed during closure. Plants used the system because
both times were
general lull in business. The mines for
same reason. Also to have everybody gone at same time. Thus avoiding the
hiring of temps, etc. But like all systems its
dying out because Western Industrial con-
ditions are changing at a fast pace.........
