The Chronicle of Higher Education is sponsoring an on-line discussion this
week on the issues raised by an article in its new issue about the status
of diplomatic history within academe. The article explores the concerns of
diplomatic historians that their work is not understood and that, as a
result, universities are leaving positions in the discipline unfilled. The
