Lesley,
I edited a Handbook of Evidence-based Guidelines for Midwife-led care in
Labour for Leicester in 1997. We actually distributed around 800 copies of
it to interested midwives all around the UK and some abroad as well as
giving one out free to every midwife in the unit. We developed them as
midwives but received quite a lot of flack from the Clinical Director (an
obstetrician) and and anaesthetist at the time. To my knowledge there is no
midwifery research around their use and development except the Webster
Paper. However, there is some obstetric research related to this. I enclose
the refernce for an article in the British Journal of Midwifery this year
which is an audit of 4 guidelines from the our Handbook. Among the
references is Iqbal et al (1998) which talks about poor compliance with
Cochrane Reviews recommendations in areas where evidence is strong. I am
extremely interested in this area because the development of guidelines for
normal birth by midwives is a good litmus test of the midwives' autonomy in
consultant unit settings. Jane's work on the context of Guideline
development will be very revealing about power relationships around this
issue.

through audit. British Journal of Midwifery.7(7):432-35
Hope that helps
Denis
