ANATOMY, IDENTITY AND POWER - An interdisciplinary forum on power,
resistance
and representations of the body
An exciting interdisciplinary conference will be taking place at Cheltenham
&
Gloucester College on SATURDAY 10TH APRIL 1999, organised by Ian Jones
and Karen Ross (Faculty of Education and Social Sciences) which will bring
together academics from a wide range of disciplines whose work considers
social, cultural and political aspects of the human body.
Papers to be given will consider, for example, contemporary men+s
magazines;
anatomy in history ; lesbian bodies ; masculinity in popular film ; massage
and sexwork; racial categorisations ; sports medicine ; representations of
the body in sculpture, literature, photography, garden design, and
contemporary documentary film; disability issues ; marketing cosmetics ;
forensic science, cosmetic surgery ... and more !
Related papers will be grouped together in chaired sessions and we are in
negotiation with a publisher to produce an edited volume of conference
papers.
The conference will also include an exhibition of paintings by Brian
Curtin,
a research student based at Pittville Campus, and photography by Trudy
Ballantyne, a lecturer in media also based at Pittville..
The keynote address will be given by Efrat Tseelon of University College,
Dublin - author of +The Masque of Femininity| (1995 : Sage), which
considers
the role of the visual - the body, fashion, and personal appearance - in
defining the female self, using insights from sociological, psychological,
historical and literary frameworks.
The programme is currently being finalised but we do at least know that the
start time will be around 10.00am and the end time around 4.30pm. The
costs
of attending are ?45 for full paying delegates and ?25 for
students/unwaged.
Please contact Ian Jones for further information and a booking form. We
hope
to see you there.
