Apologies if you get this twice...
I have been asked by the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) to see if anyone
would be interested in having a Canadian intern.
The Canadian government runs a scheme called Youth International Internship
Program (YIIP) to give young graduates the opportunity to gain work
experience overseas. One of the project partners is the CMA who
specifically place museum interns.
We have an intern coming in October who will be helping create a resource of
information about the collections for education purposes. I was very
impressed with the quality of the applicants and I telephone-interviewed
three (several had museum studies diplomas from Leicester!).
The program funds the intern to an amount up to $12000 (about £5000). The
host museum suggests a project and then finalises it with the help of the
CMA. Each internship lasts around 24 weeks. The host institution also has
the responsibility for finding somewhere for the intern to live (although
the intern pays) and applying for the work permit. In my case, I found this
was a very small amount of work in exchange for a project worker for six
months!
If anyone is interested in hosting an intern, contact Dawn Roach at the CMA.

web site http://www.museums.ca/YIIP/Policy.htm
If anyone would like more information about the host's responsibilities from
a host perspective, feel free to contact me.
