A news item today in the Independent says that the BBC is about to launch
as a free internet service provider, FreeBeeb. The Indy says there is
pressure on the Beeb to float off their Internet services to provide a huge
cash injection, and quotes a BBC internet exec. as saying he had been told
in equity terms, the internet services were now worth as much as the rest
of the BBC put together. Freebeeb is described as providing a gateway to
the Beeb's terrific range of content.

The BBC online news report says that Freebeeb will attract users because of
its public service non-advertising stance, although Freebeeb comes under
BBC.com, the commercial BBC site. It also says, encouragingly, that
"Internet industry news Website The Register reported that several major
British Internet publishers thought it would lead to "unacceptable
distortions in the private sector"".

Why of interest to museums? we are potentially very important content
providers, and the Beeb, which shares with us the DCMS as its Government
department, could be an interesting online publisher.
