PETRIE MUSEUM PROJECT MANAGER
Fixed term contract, full time for 2.5 years
(post supported by the Designation Challenge Fund)
The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology holds one of the most
wide-ranging collections of Egyptian material anywhere in the world. The
museum has just been awarded a grant under the Government's Designation
Challenge Fund to create a computerised catalogue of its extensive
collections, including images, and to make it available to users worldwide
via the Internet. This is a major project to provide access to collections
information for many different user groups, from academic researchers to
schoolchildren. An experimental joint public interface will be created
together with The Manchester Museum - both museums contain material
originally excavated from the same sites - and this could form the basis of
much wider virtual collaborations.
The Project Manager will be involved in procuring the documentation system
- a museum collections management package - and will play the lead role in
developing documentation procedures. S/he will recruit and lead a team of
people (4FTE) inputting data and images and will oversee the development
and ongoing evaluation of the website to tight deadlines. The ideal
candidate will have a background in museums and technology and demonstrable
experience of delivering a project or projects of this kind. A strong
commitment to public access and the ability to motivate staff are vital.
Training and support will be provided where necessary.
Salary is currently £27,580 inclusive of London Allowance, per annum.
Interviews are expected to be held on Wednesday 29 September 1999.
Applications in the form of a cv with the names of two referees should be
submitted to the Financial Administrator, Institute of Archaeology, 31-34
