Best Poster in the Project Showcase (sponsored by ESRI). This was won by
Peter Boyd of Shrewsbury Museum Service for 'GIS in Museums - A Case
Study'. This poster echoed the conference theme of 'Improving access to
better information', illustrating the pioneering work undertaken to
introduce GIS into the museums service. A museum must keep accurate
records about the items in its care and be able to access information
about those items in response to requests from the general public or
specialist researchers. Visitors can now find out what artefacts have
been found in particular areas, and using GIS has also enabled the
discovery of the differing distributions of bronze tools, enhancing the
interpretation of items displayed whilst providing access to other items
not on display. Most importantly via the World Wide Web the potential of
providing access to those who can not visit the museum - through
illness, disability, infirmity or geographical remoteness from the
museum.
