Sharing Museum Skills Millennium Awards
Secondee Uncovers Secrets of Egyptian Costume

London, 1 November 1999 -- Sharing Museum Skills Millennium Award winner
Carolyn Perry has recently completed a six-week secondment developing a
unique educational guide to the costume collection of the Petrie Museum
of Egyptian Archaeology, London.

The information pack contains patterns for creating replicas of
authentic Egyptian clothing as well as details of materials, tools and
techniques. Highlights of the Petrie's collection include the world's
oldest surviving dress, the Tarkhan linen dress, worn by a teenager in
2800BC. The pack was developed in response to enquiries from young
people studying textiles at GCSE level. It was produced in consultation
with local teachers and visiting schools and will be evaluated and
developed over the coming year before being published on the Petrie
Museum website.

The Sharing Museum Skills Millennium Awards scheme is
funded by the Millennium Commission and encourages both paid and
volunteer staff in museums and galleries to undertake placements with
other museums and heritage organisations. The aim of the scheme is to
benefit communities by improving the public experience of museums, art
galleries and heritage institutions.

Annie Hollobone, Sharing Museum Skills Millennium Awards
administrator, commented: "I am delighted with the success of this
latest secondment. Not only has Carolyn Perry produced a valuable
information resource during her time at the Petrie Museum, but the
experience will also directly inform her work as Arab World Education
Officer at the British Museum, which intends to open a new textile
centre in 2002. This is precisely the kind of productive collaboration
that the Sharing Museum Skills Scheme was created to encourage."
