Performance indicators
A letter for publication signed by Sir Brian Fender, HEFCE Chief
Executive, has been sent to The Daily Telegraph following John Clare's
article last Friday. In the article John Clare wrongly claimed that the
funding councils were condemning or praising different groups of
universities and colleges as part of the Performance Indicators
exercise.
The text of the letter is given below.
'John Clare in his article on student completion rates (Friday 3
December) is wrong to suggest that the funding councils either praised
or condemned universities for being socially inclusive or exclusive or
having high or low graduation rates.
The funding councils presented this information without making such
value judgements. Universities and colleges now have an opportunity to
assess their performance against a variety of benchmarks and take
action, if appropriate.
We have in the UK a diverse system of higher education with universities
pursuing different missions. The whole point of these indicators is to
provide more transparent information about performance, which will
reflect this diversity'.
