MELCOM INTERNATIONAL
THE EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION OF MIDDLE EAST LIBRARIANS
http://www.uni-bamberg.de/unibib/melcom/home.html

21st International Conference, Liege, 17th-19th May 1999

SECOND CIRCULAR
(also at http://www.uni-bamberg.de/unibib/melcom/news.html)

Dear colleagues

a little late (as usual ...) I have finished an informal
second circular containing the preliminary programme, the
names of all so far confirmed participants and the titles of
the presentations (which are currently still in a purely
alphabetic order; I will try to set up a more precise
timetable in the 3rd circular). I also included those who
weren't yet sure if they can come or not but showed interest
to receive further informations. Furthermore Frederic Bauden
has given some advices on how to get to Liege.

A 3rd and final circular will be sent out a few weeks before
the conference.

Finally I have to apologize to all those who have written
something personal and have not received anything alike from
me but I presently have not the time to respond in a more
personal matter. Liege will hopefully give an opportunity
for that.

See you soon

Andreas Drechsler

PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME:

Monday 17/5:
morning: registration and lectures; afternoon : lectures
4.30 or 5 PM: brief presentation of the most important mss
preserved at the University Library by Carmelia
Opsomer-Halleux, curator and presentation of islamic mss.
and rare imprints by Frederic Bauden
6 PM: cocktail reception by the Chief librarian.

Tuesday 18/5 ("Brussels' day"):
in the morning visits of the Royal Library, manuscripts and
old imprints departments, with lectures by Godefroid de
Callatay (on Oriental rare imprints) and Hossam Elkhadem (on
Islamic manuscripts), and the exhibition "Splendeurs du
Maroc" at Royal Museum of Central Africa with a Moroccan
lunch there (approximate costs 665 BEF). In the afternoon
visit of the Bibliotheca Wittockania, a private museum
presenting the collection of Mr Wittock devoted to binding.
There is currently an exhibition on Ruffin's work in Egypt
during Napoleon's expedition. Approximate costs for the
museums: 400 BEF or 20 DEM
In the evening farewell dinner in a Tunisian restaurant in
Liege (approximate costs 1000 BEF or 50 DEM).

Wednesday 19/5:
morning: lectures; early afternoon :
lectures, afternoon: Melcom affairs.
Farewell cocktail offered by the Governor of the Liege
Province at the old palace of the Bishop

A few people have asked Frederic Bauden for closer
information on how to reach Liege once you arrived in
Belgium, so Frederic has put together some advices:

1) For those coming from Great Britain by Eurostar, their
train will stop at Bruxelles Midi. They have to take another
train at the same station to Liege. There are two trains per
hour leaving at '27 and '54. It is not possible to make a
reservation for national trains from abroad. They will have
to buy it at their arrival.
2) Those coming by airplane through Bruxelles National
Airport will have to take the train at the airport up to
Bruxelles Nord, get off at that station and take the train
to Liege (add ten minutes to the timetable mentioned for
Bruxelles Midi).
3) Those coming from France or Germany by train with Thalys
(there are direct Thalys from Paris to Liege twice a day),
should reach Liege without problem.
4) Once at Liege station, called Liege Guillemins, they
will find taxis and buses in front of the station. A taxi
ride to the centre must cost about 300-400 BEF (15 to 20
DEM). To go to the centre by bus, one must take the nGrad 1,
4, 48, and ask to the driver to indicate them the Place de
la Republique Francaise stop. This is where the Hotel Ibis
is. Those willing to stay more days in Liege might be
interested in buying an 8-ride pass (210 BEF or 10,5 DEM).
A one-way ticket costs 50 BEF (2,5 DEM).

In case anybody gets lost Frederic offers this:
"Anyway Belgium is a small country. He or she can call me
and I will take my car !"
