Subject: Sum: Arabic Bookstores
To: [log in to unmask]

Many months ago I posted a query regarding sources for ordering Arabic
language books on the Web. Many of you responded, and I have finally
had
the time to compile the responses. Thanks to all who responded, & I
hope
this list is helpful to others. Comments are from the people who sent
responses. I have not been in touch with the stores myself yet.

LIST OF ONLINE SOURCES FOR PURCHASING ARABIC LANGUAGE BOOKS

1. Bousani's in cairo at <[log in to unmask]>

2. Kazi Publications, Inc., at: http:\\www.kazi.org\

3. International Book Centre
2007 Laurel Drive
PO Box 295
Troy, Michigan 48099-0285
phone 248-879-8436
Be sure to ask for their "middle eastern catalog"
They have all kinds of interesting things-including educational
software.
Good selection of reference material.

4. Islamic Book Service
2622 E. Main Street
Plainfield, IN 462668
317-839-8150
Mostly Islamic, but interesting to check out. They don't always have
the
things they advertise in stock, but worth getting their catalog,
anyway.

5. World of Reading
www.wor.com
They will send you a catalog from their site. They have many
languages.
Prices not great, but they have a program (computer) called "Talk
Now!" It is
not bad. Quite useful in aiding in vocabulary, actually.

6. Astrolabe
www.astrolabepictures.com
They will send you a catalog from their site. This is actually my
favorite
catalog and place to order. They have a great selection and it they
have it
usually their prices are better than the others.

7. Arabesq
www.arabesq.com
Doesn't have a catalog. Excellent support. Willing to help you
personally
with just about anything pertaining to Arabic language--including
on-line
classes. Sells many videos (disney) that are in Arabic the other
places don't
sell. They also have a program (book and audio tapes) that is for
learning
"Classical Arabic", quite expensive, but pretty good.

8. Sound Vision
www.soundvision.com
Haven't actually ordered from this one (all the ones so far I have
ordered
from personally). They just sent me their catalog--guess I got on one
of
those mailing lists. It has many things the others don't have though.

9. Another one I haven't ordered from but has a great selection of
computer
programs is
www.ARAMEDIA.com
I think that is the correct address. They don't really have language
learning
programs, but once you have some knowledge you may want to investigate
what
they have.

10. Joppa Books, Ltd. http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/joppa
where you will be able to view all our current lists. In addition we
will
shortly have all our stock on line, where you will be able to find
basic
texts in English and Arabic on the Near and Middle East.
>From our web site you will be able to choose to receive any list
GEOGRAPHICAL AREA or SUBJECT. SUBJECT lists, however, are sent only
by
e-mail.

serials to the Library of Congress and all the Universities Library in
the

12. Daff & Raff books at <[log in to unmask]>
or visit the Web Site www.daffraff.com.

13. There's a really good bookstore online, which I've used a number
of times.
They carry both modern and classical material. They're very efficient
and
prices are incredibly low. Shipping however can get a little pricey.
Try
the link below: www.almaktabah.com

16. http://www.arabworld.com/abc/

17. I have had good experience ordering from Dar al-Kitab al-Arabi,
which
does have a web site. Unfortunately, however, the web site is not
up-to-date, so I frequently call to ask about new items in stock.
Their
toll-free number is 1-888-88kitab. They specialize in religious books
and
order from Beirut.

18. I was recently in Paris and the proprietor of Makatabat Ibn Sina /
Librairie Avicenne said that they would take orders by phone or email.
 I
think they have a web site, but am not certain. I know they have an
email
address, but unfortunately I cannot locate it at the moment.
telephone/fax # is
01-40-46-04-07.
