April's Health Which? includes an interesting article on health
information on the internet.
Survey in Nov last year of just over 2000 UK subscribers to
journal found 76 who had used the internet for health info.(This
seems a small number to me?) Almost one third hadnt found what
they were looking for.
There are some details of how they searched, then the article
goes on to describe health gateways and issues around checking
quality (including their own checklist). Then has results of a
panel they assembled to review sites on heart drugs, breast
cancer, and asthma.
Also there are a couple of articles which have web info:
Consumer Association concerns about ads on the eBMJ site.
See http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/318/7183/598
for the letter and replies. Raises the issues of who pays for
free sites, and whether it matters that patients can access ads..
