Netskills Workshop:
Databases and the Web

9:30 - 4:30 Tuesday 5th October 1999 Newcastle University

Web authors and database users are becoming increasingly aware of
the massive potential for integrating Web and database technologies.
There are many practical uses such as providing cost-efficient
information services or intranets, revitalising legacy database systems,
as a means of managing Web-based information, and for electronic
commerce.
This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web who
would like to understand how to connect purpose designed or pre-existing
databases to the Internet. This workshop gives both an overview of the
different tools and techniques available and teaches the practical skills
necessary to use them.
One of the first courses of its kind, it is suitable for anyone involved
in publishing via the Internet or an intranet. Also anyone involved in
database development who wishes to consider integrating Web interfaces
will find this workshop useful.

Workshop Content:

The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.

Topics covered will include:

 * Why integrate databases and the Web?
 * Static and dynamic publishing using Access 97
 * Creating Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASPs)
 * Third party tools for dynamic Web publishing
 * Accessing databases with Allaire Cold Fusion
 *   Web databases on Unix
 * SQL (Structured Query Language) basics
 * Configuring ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) on PC workstations

By the end of the workshop participants will have...

 * seen examples of the potential offered by this technology
 * produced and formatted both static and dynamic Web
     pages from Microsoft Access
 * investigated how to use Microsoft ASPs to connect to
     any ODBC database
 * an opportunity to design pages allowing users to
search and 'drill-down' any ODBC database
 * used Allaire Cold Fusion to connect an ODBC database
     to the Web
 * explored the use of Perl CGI scripts to connect any
     ODBC database to the Web

Workshop Requirements:

In order to gain the most from this workshop, participants will need
to have a basic understanding of: HTML (including the concept of
HTML forms); how to publish files to a Web Server; relational
databases e.g Microsoft Access - they should understand the
following terms: table, field, record, key; the concept of SQL
(details not necessary)

The cost of the workshop is 105 pounds for participants from higher
and further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
