Hi Lindsey,
The situation here at CGCHE is that CDs and Software that accompany books
are issued with the book, and on the same barcode - we considered issuing
them as separate items, but thought this would cause complaints as the
software is effectively part of the same item.
That said, we do keep the CDs separately at the Issue desk, and they are
only put into the book (in a jewel case for protection) at issue. All the
CDs are tattled with 3M CD tattles, have the ISBN and barcode of the book
they accompany written on in special pen, and are protected by Diskfilm.
There is also a note on the catalogue record to say "accompanying software"
(I think in the 505 MARC field). Finally, the books themselves have labels
on the spine, and by the date label - to remind both students and Issue Desk
staff that there is a CD with the book.
As to sensitising and desensitising - if your system is magnetic based, it
can't damage the CD as the data is stored in a hard medium, not a magnetic
one.
With Floppy disks it's a little different - we also copy them and issue the
copy whilst archiving the original. We don't tattle the disks themselves
(because the tattle itself may interfere with the data, even if not
desensitised); but otherwise the system is the same as with the CDs
Hope this helps.
David
