Dear John
In delayed response to your intranet/internet GIS questions, I would
recommend looking at Autodesk MapGuide at www.mapguide.com
Here are some key points:
* MapGuide provides you with live vector data over the internet or
your intranet, rather than the static images provided by most other
web-enabled packages;
* MapGuide can be used to digitize and update data held on the
server;
* MapGuide is very easy to use and sites can be developed without
programming knowledge and with unparalleled speed;
* MapGuide is built from the ground up using internet technology
and consequently offers considerable speed advantages;
* MapGuide minimizes network traffic;
* MapGuide enables you to connect to a wide range of databases and
reports, using Cold Fusion from Allaire, which comes with the product;
* MapGuide is very competitively priced
There are a number of interesting MapGuide internet sites in the UK.
These include a site for the 1997 UK Election web site
(www.election.co.uk/maps) (which was accessed by over 4 million people)
and a site for the recent Scottish Parliamentary Elections
(www.scottishelections.co.uk).
Cheers
John.

Subject: GEN - GIS in Agricultural Planning
Hello,
I am interested in any technical or general information related
to the use
of GIS in agricultural planning.
In Scotland we are making extensive use of GIS in agricultural
planning.
The system we have in place only enables remote users to read
spatial and
non-spatial data held on a central server. The GIS is also put
to limited
use at the moment in terms of user analysis functionality.
We are currently reviewing this system.
I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has any
information
or advice concerning the use of GIS in the capture of spatial
data over a
WAN as well as in the management and analysis of agricultural
data.
Users experiences, pointers to relevant literature, anything
related would
be welcome.
On the general level I am interested in information (including
links)
related to:
- Agricultural Field digitisation programmes
- Agricultural production monitoring and modelling
I have a number of specific technical questions:
- Can Wide Area Networks enable remote users to digitise and
manipulate
geographical polygon objects held centrally on a Server and
cope with up to
30 concurrent users?
- Is it possible to prevent 30 dispersed users editing the same
geographical polygon object?
- Is it possible to ensure that users see the most up to date
data?
- Is it possible to prevent users digitising the same polygon
twice?
Creating slivers etc?
- What software and hardware would be needed for an optimum
system?
We are currently using ArcView and SDE
- What network, server and client-side performance is required?
Many Thanks
John Clarke
